Le Franco Phoney

All things French as seen by an outsider…

About me June 23, 2008 @ 11:00 pm

Personal background

Name: April Wendy Hollands (often called by my middle name)

Countries live in: Born in Australia, then moved to England in my twenties, then France after that.

Born: In the seventies.

Passions: Snow-based activities (skiing, snowboarding, telemarking etc.); writing; learning new stuff every week; photography; music.

I also quite like: Cow-watching; cheese; chocolate; chatting to strangers in English or French (if they can put up with my bad French); swimming.

I really don’t like: Glossy magazines (terrible content); gossip; olives; techno music; intolerance (unless related to techno music etc.); double standards (apart from my double standard about intolerance).

Writing background

Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts (English Literature/Linguistics).

Experience: 10+ years as a technical author; 7+ years as a freelance journalist (including running my own music publication before selling it when I left the UK); 4+ years as a production editor; 3+ years dabbling in writing novels when time allows.

Writing career highlight: It’s a draw between seeing my first article published in my favourite music magazine and being offered a job at the New York office of a very famous publisher — and having the strength to turn it down because the timing wasn’t right.

On the To Do list

1. Get novel #1 finished edited and published.
2. Start novel #2.
3. Learn how to play my acoustic guitar.
4. Improve my language skills.
