How to eat a nun

Photo of French pastry called a nunDon’t be alarmed by the title of this blog post.

The French word  ‘religieuse‘ means ‘nun’ in English, and is also the name of this tasty looking treat. Other treats not pictured include the ‘chausson aux pommes‘ (‘apple slipper’: Cornish pasty-shaped pastry filled with apple purée) and ‘pets de non‘ (‘nun’s farts’: fried balls of choux pastry, covered in sugar).

In comparison, une religieuse sounds more appetising. The nun pictured came from a bakery in La Clusaz, but rest assured that nuns, their farts and apple slippers are available all over France.

So how does a nun taste? A nun tastes great! It’s similar to a chocolate eclair, with the choux pastry filled with chocolate custard. Really, the only differences are the shape and the splodge of cream holding the head to the body. Oh, and they’re much messier to eat. If you want to feel gluttonous, eat the body of one of these nuns: its size almost guarantees that it will fall apart in your hands, leaving you with custard rolling down your fingers as you try to stuff it in your mouth before further collapse. So, my recommendation for how to eat a nun is to eat it in private — or on a plate with a spoon if you’re feeling posh. Also available in other flavours such as coffee and vanilla.

  1. How to eat a nun? How does a nun taste? Whoa, I’m backing away from this one Miss Wendy. I’ll stick with eclairs.

  2. I have to agree with Ron on this: eclairs are the sensible option, although the cream is nice to have between bites of the nun (presuming she hasn’t collapsed all over you already).

  3. Who could not be attracted by the title of this piece, liking chocolate or cakes is irrelevant.

I’m limiting my food consumption, I refuse to say diet, but I’m confident I could eat a nun. My method would be to bite her head off first and then spoon out her innards. Chocolate eclairs will forever invoke thoughts of a Religieuse now I know of them but how boring an eclair seems in comparison.

  4. Thanks Angela. I hadn’t thought of the spooning out her innards method, but that does sound appealing. No custard on the plate going to waste. 🙂

  5. This is my all-time favourite French treat, and I think I put on weight every time I go to France because I eat so many of them. Once I found a shop in Sydney that sold them and I was thrilled, but they were closed the next time I went by 🙁

  6. Ruby, closed permanently? Damn! Maybe they just moved. You must track them down (or not, depending on how you’re feeling about body shape).
