Looking up in Annecy #3

Photo of a cow on a bus stop roof in Annecy, FranceAfter looking up in a street in Annecy and seeing a sign that shows the pedestrianised area used to be a main highway, I’ve started looking up more frequently. My efforts were rewarded pretty quickly when I saw this cow on top of a bus stop!

Annecy has never hosted the Cow Parade, so seeing a random cow on top of a bus stop shelter does seem a bit unusual. However, the area is known for its local cheeses, especially Reblochon and Tomme Blanche, so maybe a cow on a bus stop shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. I’ve no idea why it’s there or how long it’s been there.  It reminds me of the big shark tail poking out of a house in Oxford, and I’m sure there are plenty of other examples of giant animal figurines in various parts of the world. Do you know of any others?

  1. Wasn’t the cow parade fun? I enjoyed the elephant parade too. Maybe they just like life size cow sculptures in this part of the world?

  2. Ruby, I made a point of looking up in Greece and found some truly surprising goings-on and architecture! Must remember to do it more often.

Mandy, yeah, how did the elephant parade start I wonder. I took so many cow pictures in New Year back in 2001. The best was a surfing cow in a shopping centre at South Ferry Seaport (from memory). I wonder where all those cows and elephants are now…

  3. That’s the cow above the raw milk dispenser over in Turbine. 1 Euro gets you a liter of yummy, fresh, cold raw milk.

  4. Ah, thanks Joe. It was indeed over that way, but on top of a bus stop at the time. I don’t go past very often but it sounds like it’s moved a few metres. Aren’t the milk dispensers fantastic, in a country where the shops are closed more often than open?
